Jean-Paul Melaga Founder & CEO, SmartPhorce
Jean-Paul Melaga is a banker turned investor and entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of SmartPhorce, a crowdsourcing app focusing on data collection in Africa. SmartPhorce recently launched in Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire and is looking to expand.
Jean-Paul is also the founder of Whitestone Finance, an advisory firm focusing on raising debt for African SMEs.
In his previous life, Jean-Paul was Head of Africa at the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi (BTMU), one of the world’s largest banks in terms of total assets. Before joining BTMU, he was Head of Francophone Africa at Renaissance Capital, a frontier investment bank focusing on emerging markets. Jean-Paul also worked as Associate Director for Standard Chartered Bank and started his career as an M&A analyst with Lehman Brothers.
Jean-Paul studied at Sciences Po and ESCP EAP and is fluent in French, English, German and Yamba. He was ranked one of Africa’s 100 Business Leaders for Tomorrow under 40 by Institut Choiseul (2014 & 2015). Jean-Paul was also named Leader of Tomorrow by the Crans Montana Forum (2014). In 2016 he was listed amongst the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African Magazine.
